Longtime convention member Marc Michael, part of the Molly Maguires, was seriously injured in a car accident the week of March 16 in Chattanooga. He is stable and in the hospital. You can send him get wells wishes at Erlanger Medical Center, 975 East Third St., Chattanooga, TN 37403, ATTN: Patient Marc Michael, Room 9129. Please do not visit in person at this time. We don't know if he'll be at ConGlomeration, but we wish him well. Marc is a fixture in the Jam Session every year.

    Our dates have changed!

ConGlomeration 2008 is April 18-20. Mark your calendars now!

    Chesley Nominations! (8/6/07)

This year, ConGlomeration will have more Chesley nominees gathered together than any other convention, other than Worldcon (or maybe more, since Worldcon is in Japan this year!): Scott Webb, Steve Gilberts, Mike Bielaczyc, Paul Bielaczyc, Laura Reynolds (apologies - no Web site found) and Dan Dos Santos. Past Guest of Honor Omar Rayyan was also nominated. The Chesley Awards were established in 1985 as ASFA's peer awards to recognize individual works and achievements during a given year. The Chesleys were initially called the ASFA Awards, but were later renamed to honor famed astronomical artist Chesley Bonestell after his death in 1986. The awards are presented annually at the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon).

Allen Steele, 2007 Guest of Honor, unable to attend (7/13/07)

One of our 2007 Guests of Honor, Allen Steele, recently let us know that he will be unable to attend ConGlomeration because of recurrent health problems. For our traveling members, he also has canceled his appearance at NASFIC/Archon 31. Please keep Allen in your thoughts and wish him a full recovery.

Dos Santos wins Gaughan Best Emerging Artist award

Our 2007 Artist Guest of Honor Dan Dos Santos (His Web site.) was awarded the Jack Gaughan Best Emerging Artist Award by The New England Science Fiction Association Inc. in mid-February. The Gaughan Award honors the memory of Jack Gaughan, a long-time friend of fandom and one of the finest SF artists of the 20th century. Because Jack felt it was important to encourage and recognize new blood in the field, The New England Science Fiction Association Inc. presents the Gaughan Award annually to an emerging artist (an artist who has become a professional within the past five years) chosen by a panel of judges. In 2007, those judges were Bob Eggleton, Richard Hescox and Todd Lockwood. Past Gaughan award winners include Jody Lee, Dorian Vallejo, Donato Giancola, Brom and Mark Zug (our 2005 Artist Guest of Honor!). Source: NESFA Web site.

Band making a name for itself

The Molly Maguires were nominated for "Best Acoustic Act" in the 7th Annual Chattanooga Independent Artists Awards and THEY WON!!. Voting took place at CIAMusic.com in October. Longtime ConGlomeration member Marc Michael is part of the group; he's a mainstay of our annual Jam Session. Here's the list of winners! Here's The Molly Maguires MySpace page and a fan page: The Molly Maguires. Congratulations Marc!

Past ConGlomeration Guest of Honor Tom Kidd won a 2006 Chesley Award at Worldcon for Best Cover Illustration - Paperback: Tom Kidd - The Enchanter Completed edited by Harry Turtledove, Baen, May. See the illustration here. Congratulations, Tom!

    Super Volunteers

Yay Super Volunteers! Pauline Sears (#314), Nadine Anderson (#258), Carley (#341) and Polly West (#199) won memberships for 2007 in the volunteer drawing. For every four hours worked, volunteers' names are put in the pot for a drawing for four memberships. Join in next year by helping make ConGlomeration great!

Local artists nominated for awards at WorldCon

Not one, but two ConGlomeration Art Show regulars, Chris Hill and Scott Webb, are finalists in the 2006 Chesley awards. The Chesleys are given out at WorldCon and are awards for art, voted on by members of the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists. You can see Chris' nominated piece, Woodbone, here. Scott's piece, Want A Balloon Little Girl?, is on his Web site, www.stric9vision.com. You may also know Scott Webb for his work sculpting the ConGlomeration Art Show awards. We've been told more than once that Scott should receive an award for his awards. Congratulations to Scott and Chris on their nominations, and good luck!
